Dr. Zubin Austin is an Associate Professor and inaugural holder of the Ontario College of Pharmacists Research Professorship at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto. His primary research focuses on the professional and personal development of health care workers at all stages of their practices.

Zubin has published over 70 peer reviewed manuscripts and is primary author on three textbooks. He is currently principal investigator on an $18-million project funded by Health Canada to examine integration of health care professionals in diverse practice settings.

Zubin has received awards for his research from the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and the Canadian Pharmacists’ Association. He is also an award winning educator having received the Government of Ontario’s Leadership in Faculty Teaching Award, the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada Excellence in Pharmacy Teaching Award, the University of Toronto’s President’s Teaching Award, and he has been named undergraduate professor of the year by pharmacy students on 11 separate occasions.

Dr. Lisa Dolovich is an Associate Professor and Research Director in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University. She is a Scientist and Associate Director at the Centre for Evaluation of Medicines, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton; Associate Professor in the Departments of CE&B and Medicine, McMaster University; Associate Professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto; and Member of the PATH Research Institute.

Lisa co-leads the OPEN program with Nancy Waite and is responsible for developing and implementing the program’s conceptual, scientific and administrative aims. Lisa’s research interests include the patient’s perspective about using or deciding to use medications, pharmacist integration into primary care practice, quality of healthcare, pharmacy and health services practice, and evaluating the clinical and policy relevance of interventions, including ehealth and community-based primary healthcare interventions, that can improve prescribing and patient medication-taking behaviour.

Lisa received her BScPhm and PharmD from the University of Toronto and an MSc in health research methodology from McMaster University. She was recently the Chair of the Ontario Ministry of Health’s Expanding Professional Pharmacy Services Working Group (2010). She was recognized as the first-ever Canadian Pharmacist of the Year (2003). In 2007, Lisa was honoured as a Canadian Pharmacists Association Centennial pharmacist.

Dr. Barbara Farrell is a Scientist with the Bruyère Research Institute and CT Lamont Primary Health Care Research Centre. She is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Family Medicine, University of Ottawa and Adjunct Assistant Professor with the School of Pharmacy, University of Waterloo. She maintains a clinical practice as a pharmacist in the Bruyère Geriatric Day Hospital and is Clinical and Research Coordinator in the Pharmacy Department at Bruyère Continuing Care.

Barb’s research interests include evaluating evolving pharmacist roles, educational needs of pharmacists and innovative models to improve medication-related care for the elderly.

Barb received her BScPhm and PharmD from the University of Toronto. She has worked in hospital and community pharmacy, academia and research. In recent years, she has spoken widely on the topic of polypharmacy and its impact on the elderly. In 2011, she was named the Canadian Pharmacist Association’s “Pharmacist of the Year.”

As Senior Instructional Developer, Integrative Learning, Katherine facilitates e-portfolio and integrative learning initiatives, supporting instructors across campus with the design and implementation of activities that help students integrate learning in academic, workplace, community and social environments.

Before joining the Centre for Teaching Excellence, Katherine was with the Distance and Continuing Education department (now the Centre for Extended Learning), where she helped instructors design learning activities for online courses. She holds a master’s in educational technology from the University of British Columbia, and received her BA from the University of Toronto.

Eric SchneiderEric Schneider, BScPhm, PharmD
Associate Professor

Dr. Eric Schneider is an Associate Professor and Associate Director, Curriculum and Assessment at the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy. He collaborates with Dr. Waite on OPEN’s Pharmacists as immunizers project  Capacity-building team.

Before coming to the University of Waterloo, Eric served on the faculty of four family practice residency programs and has taught in the colleges of pharmacy, medicine, and nursing of several universities in the United States. Most recently, Eric was Associate Dean for the College of Pharmacy’s Northwest Regional Campus in Fayetteville and Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. In that role he was responsible for student affairs, academic affairs, and faculty affairs and overall implementation of the regional campus. While at the University of Arkansas he also served as faculty in the Area Health Education Center, Northwest Family Medicine residency program in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He has been a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist since 1992.

Eric received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the Saint Louis College of Pharmacy and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed a clinical pharmacy residency in family medicine.

Roderick SlavcevRoderick Slavcev, PhD, MBA
Shoppers Drug Mart Professor in Entrepreneurial Business

As the Shoppers Drug Mart Professor in Entrepreneurial Business, Dr. Roderick Slavcev leads the development and delivery of the School of Pharmacy’s business curriculum. In 2011, he was the recipient of the Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada Janssen Award for Innovation in Education.

Roderick’s research interests are in genetics, molecular biology, virology and technology transfer. His projects focus on bacteriophage-based biotechnology and include the use of coliphages to design and construct vectors to develop novel vaccines, pharmaceuticals and gene delivery systems, and identify and apply novel phage genomic anti-bacterial genes with potential phage therapy applications.

Anson TangAnson Tang, BScPhm, BA, MBA

Anson Tang came to the University of Waterloo with broad pharmacy career experience. He earned his BScPhm degree from the University of Toronto, and went on to complete a BA in French at Glendon College, York University, and a MBA at the Schulich School of Business, York University (MBA Exchange: China Europe International Business School, in Shanghai).

His career path has taken him through roles in community pharmacy, multinational firms within pharmaceutical industry, and the drug insurance sector of health business management. Anson’s current interests include experiential education in relation to professional competence, as well as drug payer themes in healthcare systems.

As Assistant Director, Anson spearheads the experiential component at the School of Pharmacy, both nationally and internationally, including co-op placements, community service learning initiatives, and clinical placements in the final year.

Cynthia-RichardCynthia Richard
Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor

Cynthia Richard was one of two recipients in 2012 to receive the Excellence in Science Teaching Awards from the University of Waterloo. She is recognized for her innovative and insightful contributions to the teaching of Pharmacy students, and her commitment to creative teaching make technically intensive course material relevant and interesting. Her students often comment on her exceptional communication skills, organization and personal support.
